Many iPhone users have experienced an issue with the display on their iPhone or iPad suddenly freezing and - no matter how hard they try - it won't respond to their increasingly manic finger tapping. The screen isn't working and the device is stuck, and essentially unusable.

But rest assured: most of the time it's quite easy to fix a frozen screen, and we list ten simple steps you should try in the following article.

Note that some people who have had the screen on their iPhone replaced are finding that their screen has become unresponsive since updating their iPhone to iOS 11.3.

Apparently that issue is linked to the use of non-Apple screens being installed by third parties. However, it's also emerged that some iPhones that have been repaired with official Apple displays are also experiencing an issue where they aren't able to automatically adjust brightness, since being updated to iOS 11. It appears that this bug existed prior to the iOS 11.3 update.

This isn’t the first time Apple has stopped the touch functionality working on repaired iPhones. In 2017 notes issued with an iOS update explained that third-party replacement parts might not work correctly. Apple issued an update a week later that fixed that issue.

With this in mind, it may be that an update to iOS could fix the problem with your screen - find out what the latest version of iOS is here... But if not, read on for tips on how to fix it.

There have also been reports that the iPhone X can suffer from an unresponsive screen when used in near-freezing temperatures. Apple acknowledged the issue which it said happened after a "rapid change" in temperature. The company then issued a software fix to resolve the problem. Read about the issues with the iPhone X here.

We also look at a problem - which has been referred to as 'Touch Disease' - in depth below, including how to avoid it and what to do if you experience it.

Note that this article is about unresponsive displays. For screens that are visibly broken or shattered, read How to repair a cracked iPhone or iPad screen. We have related advice in How to fix an iPhone or iPad that won't turn on.

Tips & fixes for unresponsive screens

We suggest that you run through these steps to try and fix the problem with your unresponsive screen.

Is the screen not working all the time, or only when using one specific app? If it's the latter, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Are your fingers wet? Dry off any moisture. Check they're clean, too - anything that could be stopping the touchscreen making a good connection.

Just to check, you're not wearing gloves, are you? Some gloves are designed to work with touchscreens, but most don't.

Try removing the screen protector, if you use one.

Give the screen a wipe with a soft cloth. (Read more: How to clean an iPhone screen safely.)

Assuming your device has this feature, check the 3D Touch sensitivity settings. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > 3D Touch and adjust the sensitivity slider.

If the screen problem is related to rotation (ie refusing to rotate when you want it to, or rotating when you don't), check Orientation Lock. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up Control Centre, and tap the 'rotating padlock' icon. And try fiddling with the side switch on your device, if it has one. (This only applies to the iPad Air 1 and earlier. iPhones have never had rotation switches.)

Hold down the circular Home button and the On/Off (Sleep/Wake) button at the same time for around 10 seconds. This will restart the device and should restore the screen to full working order.

Make sure that there isn't a software update to install - Apple has fixed a few issues that were causing screens to become unresponsive in subsequent updates to iOS. Read: Latest version of iOS.

Has the screen become unresponsive since you had it repaired by a company other than Apple? There have been reports that some third-party replacement screens don't work as well with the iPhone as others, so we suggest you return to the shop and tell them about the issue you are having. Read about getting an iPhone screen fixed here.

A more extreme option is to reset the device to factory settings.

If none of these tips work, it's possible your device has so-called Touch Disease (also known as Touch IC Disease)
